You'll Never Be Successful Until You Learn This Hard Lesson

You'll never be successful in real estate until you learn this hard lesson

You want to be successful and that's a great thing. I want you to be successful too! I want you to dream your dreams and feel a great sense of accomplishment when you achieve them. There's nothing like setting a goal and reaching it. It's what you've aspired to do and it's important to see progress in your business endeavors.

One thing that we need to keep in check though is that success is personal. "Success" is a subjective term that is individual to each of us and our own perspectives. That means that what "success" looks like to you may look completely different to someone else. While some people may want to do 200 deals a year, it's perfectly ok if you prefer to do 20. It's personal to each of us and there's no wrong answer.

Over the years, I've seen some coaches and brokers ask agents how many deals they want to do each year. When the agent gives their answer, the coach/broker basically tells them that's not good enough and it needs to be higher. That's unacceptable for multiple reasons. To begin with, it's your decision how you want to run your real estate business and how many transactions you want to accomplish. No one knows the panoramic view of your life but you.

For example, you may have 3 other businesses to run, an active family to take care of, or a sick loved one to care for. These are all real-life scenarios and whose opinion is it that you need to do more than you're comfortable with? The only one making that decision should be you. You should not be feeling pressured to do more because other people think you should.

While I wholeheartedly agree that stretching ourselves past our comfort zone, having motivation and accountability to move forward is a great practice, I don't believe anyone gets to set your goals but you. I love pushing myself and having someone there to make me accountable, but great coaches let you set your parameters and help you accomplish them. They pull it out of you.

However, if you continually set goals that aren't from YOUR own heart, you won't have the motivation to achieve them and you'll possibly also feel defeated when you don't achieve them. This is a hard hit because you'll feel negative emotions for a goal that you didn't even set to begin with! I'd much rather see you doing well and have a career you enjoy getting up in the morning for instead.

Also, the "individuality aspect" comes into play here too. You may only want to do 1 deal a month because you want to be able to provide undivided quality service to your clients. That's perfectly acceptable and there's nothing wrong with that. It shouldn't always be about money, it should be about what makes you happy and content in life. There's no point in pushing yourself to exhaustion and misery because someone else told you that's what you need to do. This is your life and your choices alone.

Lastly, I also see agents leave brokerages because of this factor and I don't even think brokers realize it. An agent that is doing a decent amount of deals and is happy that gets continually pushed to do "more, more, more" and being constantly compared to others will inevitably leave their brokerage to go to an atmosphere that is more conducive to low-pressure and letting them be themselves without the negative pressure. I can't say I blame them. Why would you stay where you feel unappreciated? That's just basic human relations.

All in all, just be sure to check in with yourself. Take time to think about what goals you want to work towards and then set goals that are personal to you and not anyone else. Make sure that you're living your life and running your business in line with what you want, not what someone else wants. It's key to a happy career.
